History of e-Sports

The earliest known video game competition took place in 1972 at Stanford University for the game Spacewar. But the sport became popular in 1980 with the Space Invaders Championship, held by Atari. The event attracted over 10,000 participants across the USA and established competitive gaming as a mainstream hobby.

Playing online video games started to become in demand with advancing internet connectivity in the late 1980s and 1990s, with the 1988 game Netrek allowing up to 16 players to enjoy the game. The 2010s saw the sport grow tremendously, with both an increase in viewership and prize money. In addition to that, a number of leagues and tournaments were founded during this period, including the World Cyber Games, the Intel Extreme Masters and Major League Gaming.
